Safariland Group announced Thursday a $7.3 million deal to supply the New York City Police Department with a variety of protective gear.

The personal protective equipment, which patrol officers will begin using next month, is engineered to protect police from ballistic threats, the company said in a statement.

The deal came about this summer after NYPD officials expressed the need to get the best ballistic protection to its ranks in a quick manner.

Gear to be delivered to the NYPD under the deal includes 20,000 high performance Delta 4 helmets, 12,000 Hardwire Type III armor plates and 6,000 TAC PR plate racks.
